Speaker Jetton's Fitness Challenge

House Speaker Rod Jetton
Completes Katy Trail Ride

Jefferson City – Rod Jetton, Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives, completed Speaker Jetton's Fitness Challenge, a weeklong ride of the Katy trail state park on Saturday, June 25. Speaker Jetton and his son Will, along with several State Representatives, members of the Missouri Bicycle Federation and other riders began their trek in Clinton on Monday, and arrived in St. Charles on Saturday afternoon.

“The purpose of the ride was to promote physical fitness in Missouri ,” said Speaker Jetton. “It was an event in which anyone, at any fitness level, could participate, something that families could do together. Members of my family came out to ride with us, and we had lots of kids who turned out to ride with their parents. We all definitely got a workout.”

In addition to promoting physical fitness, the ride was also a chance to promote tourism in the state.

“Tourism is one of our biggest industries in Missouri ,” Speaker Jetton added. “We made stops all along the trail, in places like Boonville, Hermann and Augusta, to listen to the ideas of community leaders about how to better take advantage of the natural beauty in Missouri and expand our already flourishing tourism industry.”

The idea for the ride originated with Rod's son Will, a fan of Lance Armstrong.

“It started out as race between me and my dad during the week of Father's day,” Will said. “I think he probably invited the other people along because he knew I'd beat him. But I enjoyed having a big group like that. We had a lot of fun.”

Officially, the event became open to the public after interest grew in the cycling community.

“Will and I still made a race out of it,” said Speaker Jetton. “He says he beat me by one second, but I'm not sure about that. We'll have to settle it at next year's Fitness Challenge.”
